CO-GISTICS

Description

  • CO-GISTICS targets the cooperative ITS services for logistics. This means to merge the existing freight and transport systems and services with the innovative new solutions (intelligent cargo, cooperative services) will give much better energy efficiency and more sustainable mobility of goods.

  • CO-GISTICS main stakeholders are local authorities (municipalities, cities and infrastructure authorities), users (truck and van drivers, fleet operators, shippers and transports), ports and airports, and service providers.

  • CO-GISTICS deploys 5 services:

  •   Intelligent Truck Parking and Delivery Area Management

  •   Cargo Transport Optimisation

  •   CO2 Footprint Monitoring and Estimation

  •    Priority and Speed Advice

  •   Eco-Drive Support

Objectives

  • Not to reinvent the services but to provide them to the key stakeholders

  • Integration of the CO-GISTICS services in one platform

  • Pilot and deploy C-ITS in European logistics hubs

  • Reduce fuel consumption and the equivalent CO2 emissions

  • Improve logistics activities efficiency in urban areas

  • Harmonise testing and drive interoperability forward

  • Cooperate with logistics and freight public/private bodies

Project Inputs:

  • Real time vehicle location monitoring which is done by the vehicle CANBUS for fuel consumption and engine parameters

  • GPS data (speeds, acceleration and trajectory) of vehicle

  • Communication via Wi-Fi

Assets:

  • Cloud Computing – the system depends upon the cloud storage and the exchange of data and information.

  • GNSS, Maps and GIS, mobile devices running Android, Mobile Applications, web-sites, 3G, 4G, NFC.

  • On Board Units in vehicles and smart sensors with the Mobile Apps installed in the users mobile (Ex-Transpark App.).

  • Roadside installation for the services to implement efficiently.

  • A real time platform where all the necessary data and information will be exchanged and shared among the users as well the local authorities.

  • Communication protocols like Wi-Fi via HTTPS/SSL protocol

  • Route planning, track and trace are used for cargo transport optimisation

Struggles:

  • The combination of the services chosen by the users varied and some of them were very low (less than 5%).

  • The users gave up on using the Co-Gistics services in 3 (30%) to 6 (35%) months.

  • Technical Barriers – many users using the same service provider

  • Legal Barriers – administrative issues, lack of support from authorities, change in political leaders due to elections.

  • Lack of awareness and interest from users.

Project Outputs:

  • Using LCMM (Low Carbon Mobility Management) App which includes Eco-drive Support and CO2 Monitoring & Estimation yields a reduction of fuel and CO2 emissions of about 10%, ranging from around 5% to about 16% in 95% of all situations.

  • Speed Advice significantly reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions

  • average waiting time at the entrance of the ports decreases significantly with the help of Cargo Transport Optimization

  • The Intelligent parking information helped to reduce the traffic by decreasing the congestion at the entrance of the parking area allowing more trucks to be assisted along different paths.

Improvements:

  • A simpler system and good user interface

  • Awareness program for the end users and keeping their interest

Pilot Cities:

CO-GISTICS services are deployed in 7 logistics hubs, Arad (Romania), Bordeaux (France), Bilbao (Spain), Frankfurt (Germany), Thessaloniki (Greece), Trieste (Italy) and Vigo (Spain).

Status:

This project is completed in June 2017 and continue to deploy the ITS services.
